'˜WE MUST never forget their bravery' '“ these were the touching sentiments of a relative of one of those killed in the Battle of Jutland.

Graham Cullin attended the commemoration event in Southsea yesterday.

The 73-year-old said it was in memory of his grandfather Vernon Midlane, who was killed when HMS Queen Mary was sunk by the Germans.

Graham, who joined the ceremony with his wife Cynthia, 68, said: ‘The whole day has been really moving.

‘I was almost in tears at one point.’

Vernon, of Newport, on the Isle of Wight, was 36 when he died. He left behind a wife and four young children.

‘His death had a massive toll on the family, it was just devastating,’ added Graham.

The former gun layer had joined the navy in 1895.

Graham said: ‘I’m very proud of him and what he did.

‘We need to make sure that other people don’t ever forget the sacrifices of people like my grandad.’
