14 photos from the last Beast from the East to hit Portsmouth

A new ‘Beast from the East’ could be on its way to the UK, according to forecasters.

The Met Office is tracking two weather events ‘fighting for influence over the UK’, including a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) which is a meteorological event associated with very cold weather.

A SSW caused the spell of wintry weather dubbed the ‘Beast from the East’ to hit the country in 2018 – and it brought heavy snow across the UK including to Portsmouth in March of that year.

The Met Office have said the current event is more likely to bring more cold weather without heavy snow but it is difficult to predict.

We decided to dive back into The News archives to find photos from the last time a ‘Beast from the East’ hit Portsmouth.
