The Met Office, in its south-east forecast, said: ‘A dull and wet morning with persistent and occasionally heavy rain.

‘The rain will slowly clear to the east through the afternoon, followed by brighter skies but a risk of isolated showers. Windy in eastern parts, with coastal gales likely.’

A Met Office spokesman added: ‘Across the UK Storm Barbara will probably not cause major impacts, but will bring some rain, which could be heavy, to the south east and possibly central England on Wednesday.

‘There is still the potential for severe gales to affect the extreme south-east of England during this period. Therefore, we are carefully monitoring the storm's development.’
