A Portsmouth City Council spokeswoman said: ‘This void is in the revetment a little further west of Spur Redoubt, in an area that is not really used by pedestrians.

‘It does not pose any immediate danger, but if we left as it is, it might get worse with any further storms coming.’

Wind gusts of up to 40mph were forecast last weekend as the Met Office issued a weather warning across the south.

Forecasters warned of potential flooding and spray from large waves, as well as travel disruption.

The windy came after two more storms hit the south coast in the last month – Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis.

The two storms caused seafront roads to be closed, bus and train services to be cancelled or diverted, and flood alerts to be issued across Hampshire.
