Storm Dennis: Met Office upgrades weather warning to 'severe' Amber alert for parts of Hampshire

THE Met Office has upgraded the weather warning for Storm Dennis to a ‘severe’ amber alert for parts of the county.

The storm is due to batter the Portsmouth area and Hampshire throughout this weekend.

It comes after Storm Ciara brought gale force winds and disruption to the south coast last Sunday.

Storm Dennis, the fourth named storm of the 2019-20 season, is due to arrive on Saturday morning and remain throughout the rest of the weekend.

The Met Office are predicting that it will bring gales with speeds of up to 58mph to Portsmouth as well as heavy rain.

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued between noon on Saturday and 9pm on Sunday, as well as for strong winds between 10am on February 15 and 11.59pm on February 16.

However the Met Office has now upgraded the warning to an amber alert for parts of Hampshire, including Petersfield, West Meon and the Winchester area.

This is in place between 12.15am and 6pm on Sunday.

Forecasters are warning that ‘Storm Dennis is likely to bring very heavy rain, flooding and disruption to travel over the weekend’.

The Met Office have also predicted that ‘around 20-40 mm of rain will fall widely’ with ‘50-80 mm likely across parts of southern England’.

Residents in the parts of Hampshire covered by the amber warning are being advised that they could expect:

- Homes and businesses are likely to be flooded, causing damage to some buildings

- Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life

- Delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely

- Spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures

- A good chance some communities cut off by flooded roads

- Power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses likely
