Storm Francis to bring heavy rain and very strong winds to Portsmouth area as Met Office issues yellow weather warnings

A STORM is set to bring heavy rain and very strong winds to Portsmouth in the coming days.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for between 9am tomorrow and 9am on Wednesday.

It has been put in place for Portsmouth as well as the surrounding areas of Havant, Fareham, Waterlooville, Gosport and Hayling Island.

Storm Francis could bring winds of up to 50mph on Tuesday, as well as over 40mph on Wednesday morning.

On its website, the Met Office says: ‘Storm Francis will bring some very strong winds leading to disruption to travel and power supplies along with potential damage to trees.

‘Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible. Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen.

‘Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible.

‘Some roads and bridges may close. Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.’

‘Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.’

The Met Office also warns that gusts are likely to reach 55-60 mph for quite a few places, with exposed coasts and hills seeing gusts of around 70 mph.
