Torrential rain caused drains to become blocked and roads in and around the city became impassable.

A tweet from Winchester Police had warned drivers to be patient and careful.

The tweet said: ‘Lots of flooding around the city at this time. Many roads are blocked or slow so please be patient. Hampshire County Council are already out unblocking drains. Please consider all pedestrians on footpaths.’

Further overnight rain across Hampshire has caused a landslide to block the railway line between Winchester and Micheldever.

The clean up operation gets underway as the Met Office issued another weather warning for thunderstorms across Hampshire.
