Why '˜deliberate' fires in Portsmouth are putting people's lives at risk

FIRES that are being started deliberately by vandals near the centre of Portsmouth could lead to a disaster elsewhere in the city, fire crews have warned.

Firefighters from Southsea Fire Station's night shift crew attended three incidents in Buckland before 10pm last night.

Incidents in Seymour Close and near Buckingham Green have seen the crews called out to bin fires, which they believe have been started intentionally.

While nobody has been spotted at the scene of the incidents, firefighters warn that this behaviour puts everyone else in the city at risk.

A spokesman from Southsea Fire Station explained: '˜This was the second night on the trot that we've been out there on numerous occasions.

'˜Our resources are being tied up when there could be a real emergency elsewhere.

'˜We had one incident on Tuesday night where we couldn't get an appliance to a fire at a care home because it was dealing with one of these deliberate fires.

'˜We turn up to these fires, deal with it, and then another one starts.

'˜These people just need to stop and think about their actions.'
