The Berewood WI, at Waterlooville, brings together women of all ages from across the community.

The celebration took place at Berewood Primary School and involved tea, cake and appearances from the mayor of Havant, Councillor Faith Ponsonby, and the Mayor of Winchester, Councillor Jane Rutter.

They jointly cut the first anniversary cake.

As well as delicious food, there was also swing dancing from the company Swing4all who demonstrated some Lindy Hop dance moves.

Amanda Halford, vice-president of Berewood WI, said: ‘We had a brilliant evening and it was great to see so many ladies up on their feet learning some moves of the Lindy hop.

‘We are a lively bunch who are always looking for local organisations to come along and teach us something new.’

Berewood WI is a social and educational charity which provides monthly speakers and demonstrators on a variety of topics decided by members.

It offers a great way for women of all ages, from all walks of life, to get together, share interests, find new ones, have fun, make friends and give something back to the community.

Cllr Ponsonby said: ‘I was delighted to attend the first birthday of the Berewood WI. Members came from the local area of both Waterlooville and Denmead, as well as from the new development.

‘They were by no means stereotypical Women’s Institute members, but of a wide age range.

‘Well done on such a good start to providing fun and friendship for women moving into the many new homes in the area.’
