The victory lifted Rick Ankers’ side back into second spot behind Havant, who they meet on the final day of the season.

Opening bowlers Nick McMurray (three for 20) and Dan Stancliffe did an excellent job up front – reducing the hosts to 56 for five after they had chosen to bat first.

Sullivan White also took wickets as the home side were limited to 216 for eight.

‘On a flat pitch with a bit of pace we felt around 250 was a par score,’ said Burridge vice-captain Dan Hewitt.

‘We did well to keep them below that.

‘Our opening bowlers did a fantastic job.’

Hewitt (88) helped get the Burridge reply off to a flier.

Geoff Dods (36) made a steady contribution before Lee Savident hit a 30-ball half-century to take the game away from the reigning champions.

‘It feels good to get a rare win over South Wilts,’ added Hewitt.

‘We are really looking forward to meeting Havant in the final game.

‘It is always good to test yourself against the best.’

A poor batting display paved the way for Portsmouth’s seven-wicket defeat at Basingstoke & North Hants in division one.

Aussie opener Fraser Hay (80) and Jack Marston (21) put on 86 for the first wicket but after that the visitors crumbled to 164 all out.
