Cllr Mike Ford and his wife mayoress Anne rolled the first bowls at Fareham Bowling Club to mark the start of play.

The club, behind the leisure centre in Leigh Road, saw a big turn-out for the event.

Club secretary Lyn Dorey said: ‘It was excellent. The morning was quite wet but by lunchtime it had dried up and the mayor and mayoress came along and bowled the first bowl.

‘Everybody had a game afterwards and we didn’t finish until 5.30pm.’

Although the club holds social events throughout the winter, play is officially open from April 9 until September 11.

Mrs Dorey said the club is looking for new members and she encouraged people to come along and try out the sport.

She said: ‘It gets busier and busier each year.’
