Agyemang: Time to become more selfish

mang has vowed to become more selfish in a bid to improve his Pompey return.

The powerful striker is the only player so far to have netted for the Blues from their opening two matches.

His header from Andy Barcham’s cross in the season curtain-raiser against Oxford capped a wonderful move by Guy Whittingham’s men.

The 32-year-old front man is not renowned for his goal-scoring exploits, bringing other qualities to the role.

During an impressive Pompey loan spell last season, he netted three times in 15 appearances.

Whittingham’s men head to Accrington tomorrow looking to get their campaign up and running with a win.

And Agyemang is gunning for a goal rush.

He said: ‘Sometimes I am too unselfish, that is the one criticism.

‘When I feel I have opportunities to shoot, maybe I don’t – and that is why I get more assists than goals.

‘But this season I am hoping to change that. I want to get more goals and still get my assists. I want to try to be a bit more ambitious.

‘I’m going to shoot on sight. Other strikers do it and they get the goals – I want to be the one who gets the goals.

‘The manager hasn’t said that to me but that is what I want to do.

‘I have always been the player that doesn’t mind as long as we win but I want to be the one who scores the winner.

‘Every year I get more assists than goals. Sometimes the role I play is me creating goals for other people rather than them creating goals for me and I want that to change, especially with the wingers we’ve brought in.

‘I expect them to try to make more goals for me and I will still keep trying to make goals for everyone else. That is the plan, hopefully.

‘A lot of time I will be holding the ball up and bringing other people in but if I do get a chance I will be taking it this time.’

Agyemang has revelled at Pompey since initially joining on loan in February.

An unhappy spell at Stevenage was subsequently ended when he signed a two-year deal with the Blues this summer.

The ex-Wimbledon man chalked up some sparkling displays, including his role in the 2-1 win at Crewe in March.

And he is seeking to maintain that this season.

He added: ‘When I am feeling like that (against Crewe), not many defenders can handle a big striker who has got pace, got power and can hold the ball up.

‘It’s hard and that is what I am trying to get in my game more.

‘I felt I could do anything that day and it carried on from that Crewe game for the rest of the season.

‘When I was at Fratton Park with the ground cheering, I felt bigger than I was because it lifts you.

‘Now I want to try to get as many goals as possible.’
