Cheltenham Town v Pompey: Away-Day Guide
Welcome to our Pompey away travel guide, brought to you by Pam Wilkins and Johnny Moore, in the memory of Ken Malley.
On Saturday (3pm), Pompey supporters will be visiting Cheltenham’s LCI Rail Stadium, Whaddon Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, GL52 5NA.
The Robins ground has a capacity of 7,200 and most Blues fans will be in the covered Hazlewoods stand behind one goal, with some in the Colin Farmer stand on the side.
How to get to the LCI Stadium
If you are travelling via the A34, then A40 from Oxford, follow the A40 through Charlton Kings, you will come to some lights where the A435 from Cirencester joins from the left.
Go straight on, but at the next set of lights turn right into Hales Road.
This is the B4075, signposted Prestbury. After half a mile bear right, staying on the B4075 as it becomes Priors Road. Take the next left into Whaddon Road, continue over a mini roundabout and the ground is on the right-hand side.
Alternately travel via the A34 and M4, taking the Swindon turn off at Junction 15, then the A419 towards Cirencester, continuing on the A417 towards Cheltenham.
At the junction with the A436 turn right onto the A436, then left at Severn Springs onto the A435.
At the junction with the A40 turn left but at the next set of lights turn right into Hales Road.
This is the B4075, signposted Prestbury.
After half a mile bear right, staying on the B4075 as it becomes Priors Road. Take the next left into Whaddon Road, continue over a mini roundabout and the ground is on the right-hand side.
The train journey from Portsmouth to Cheltenham Spa takes around four hours, with changes at Bristol Temple Meads and Gloucester.
On match day there may be rail-replacement buses between Gloucester and Cheltenham on some journeys.
Cheltenham Spa station is about two miles from the ground so best to either take a taxi, or take the D bus, which runs every ten minutes from the station to the town centre.
From the town centre, it is a short walk to Whaddon Road down Prestbury Road, or take the A bus to Whaddon Road.
Car parking at the ground is limited as is street parking nearby.
Our latest information is that the park and ride match day shuttle service from the racecourse has been discontinued.
Where to eat and drink
- In Sunday’s Sports Mail a gremlin in the system saw Cambridge United’s ‘where to eat and drink’ section mistakenly go to print instead of that of Cheltenham Town.
We are sorry for any confusion or inconvenience caused and are happy to run below the correct ‘where to eat and drink’ section for this weekend’s trip to Whaddon Road.
In the ground there are the usual hot drinks, burgers, pies and sausage rolls.
Recommended by other supporters is the Kemble Brewery Inn, 27 Fairview Street, GL52 2JF, a CAMRA good beer guide listed pub serving food.
Around 10 minutes walk from the ground are the Sudley Arms, Prestbury Road, GL52 2PN and the Feathered Fish (formerly known as the Conservatory),Winchcombe Street, GL52 2NW, both serv food and there is a fish and chip shop between the two. To find these pubs, turn right out of the club car park and then turn left at the end of the road.
Go straight over the roundabout and the Sudley Arms is on the left and the Feathered Fish further up on your right.
Otherwise, very near the ground is the Parklands Social Club, Wymans Road, GL52 5PR, where there is limited parking for £4. Go down Whaddon Road, passing the ground and the bowing club on your left.
Take the first left and the entrance to the social club is a short distance down on the left.
The club has a number of tv screens usually showing football.
