The Blues were caught cold in the first half, with the Shrimps two ahead inside 21 minutes as Ryan Edwards and Tom Barkhuizen fired the hosts into a commanding lead.

Cook’s side rallied in the second half, dominating possession and creating plenty of chances but ran into an inspired goalkeeping display from Barry Roche, with the end scoreline harsh on the visitors.

The Pompey boss, though, was in no mood to offer up excuses.

He said: ‘We know this league now.

‘There’s no easy games, every team poses a threat and fitness levels have gone up.

‘We are the big scalp.

‘There were times in the first half when we were very stretched.

‘In the second half it was how I like the game to be played, where we totally dominate them and create chances.

‘But it is not good enough, we know that.

‘I am not going to sit and try to make our fans’ journey home better tonight.

‘We are all going to have a pig sick journey home.

‘That is the reality of the game.’
