Aged 35, Ashdown has come out of retirement in a bid to impress manager Paul Cook.

Here are 12 facts on the Fratton favourite.

1. Born in Reading on 30 November, 1980, Ashdown spent 13 years at his hometown club.

2. He had loan spells at Rushden & Diamonds, Ebbsfleet, Bournemouth and Arsenal before leaving Reading in 2004.

3. In June 2004, Harry Redknapp signed Ashdown but he faced stiff competition for a place with Shaka Hislop and then Konstantinos Chalkias ahead of him.

4. Despite earning himself a string of appearances in the Premier League, Ashdown found himself back down the pecking order with the signings of Sander Westerveld and Dean Kiely.

5. For the 2006-07 season David James was signed and Ashdown subsequently joined Norwich City on loan.

6. After making only two appearances at Norwich, he returned to Pompey and picked up a 2008 FA Cup winners medal, which was later stolen.

7. He was released at the end of the 2009-10 season but rejoined before the start of the new season after David James left.

8. During that season he made 50 appearances as Pompey finished 16th in the Championship.

9. Between February and March 2011, the keeper broke a post-war record for most minutes (636) without conceding a goal.

10. In his final season at Pompey he produced a man-of-the-match performance in a 2-2 draw with Southampton.

11. After being released by the Blues because of financial issues, Ashdown supported the bid for the fans to buy back their club and donated £1,000.

12. He then had short spells at Leeds United, Crawley Town and Oxford United before retiring in 2015.
