The Championship club opted to recall the central defender from his Fratton Park loan spell after failing to break into Paul Cook’s first-team squad.

Hyam was signed on transfer deadline day in a temporary stay that was scheduled to end on January 8.

The 20-year-old was seen as defensive cover for Jack Whatmough and Matt Clarke during their returns from injury, while Adam Barton had been sold to Partick Thistle.

As a result, he made just one senior squad – as an unused substitute against Bristol Rovers in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Instead, Hyam made five appearances for the Blues’ reserves.

And first-team coach Ian Foster revealed the youngster has now returned to the Madejski Stadium.

He said: ‘Dominic has gone back to Reading.

‘He played for them and scored against Manchester United last week, but also recently played for us against Bristol City.

‘However, Reading have made the decision to take him back.

‘His game time with ourselves has been very limited and Reading decided they wanted Dominic to return.

‘He is still our player until the loan finishes but, at the moment, he is training with Reading for the foreseeable future.’

The last of Hyam’s Pompey reserve outings was almost a fortnight ago in the 2-0 Central League Cup defeat at Bristol City.

Last week he was a member of the Royals’ under-23 side which drew 2-2 against Manchester United at Adams Park, with Hyam opening the scoring.
