The Portsmouth-based now former boss departs with the side sitting third in the table - eight points behind table-toppers Bush Hill with a game in hand.

Wheatcroft, who only took the role in April replacing Danny Thompson, made the decision after a 'difficult few weeks' in his personal life.

The former Southampton and Pompey youth player's daughter contracted Covid-19 while a busier upcoming work schedule would have forced him to miss some matches when the season resumes after the nationwide lockdown.

On his departure, Wheatcroft said: 'It is with regret that I have to leave my position as manager of Infinity FC. It has not been a great few weeks for me and my family with my daughter catching Covid-19 and others feeling poorly.

‘Additionally, I've not worked properly since October with lockdown the cause so I must think of my family and myself.

‘I will be going back to work which will involve me missing games so I've decided to stand down as manager due to not being able to give the club the commitment it deserves.

‘I know that you can still smash it boys and I will try to support you when free. I'd like to thank Paul, Jody, Simon, Gary, Craig and Roy for what they're doing for the club and giving me the job. I wish you all the success in the future.’

Infinity have not played since a 1-1 home league draw with Clanfield on October 24.

For the past four weeks they have been unable to train or play competitive as part of the 'non-elite' football suspension during the nationwide lockdown.

Wheatcroft was undefeated in his 13 games in all competitions as Infinity manager.
