‘I can’t see fixtures being completed’

Baffins Milton Rovers boss Steve Leigh has genuine fears his club might not be able to complete their Wessex League fixtures.

The Portsmouth-based club have seen 16 home games postponed this season, and a 17th is highly likely against Hamworthy United this weekend.

An 18th could also follow next Tuesday against Premier Division title-chasers Alresford if the weather does not drastically improve.

Baffins have played the least number of games of any club in the Wessex League - just 22 - nine fewer than Hamworthy United (who have a 3G pitch).

That means Rovers have to shoehorn 16 games in between now and the scheduled final day of 2019/20 on April 25.

Leigh’s side have played just two home league matches since October 26, and still have 11 PMC Stadium games left to play.

In addition, they have been forced to switch two Wessex League Cup ties to their opponents’ grounds in order to get them played.

'The weather has been relentless and I am lost for words,' admitted Leigh.

'Something needs to be done because it is a huge problem.

'I am not blaming the league because it is happening across all the clubs.

'We have offered alternatives to the league but they have been turned down.

'If we could get the 4G pitches locally we would be quite happy to play the games on them.

'This isn't possible apparently because there aren't stands with seats for 50 people which is a requirement.

'As a gate-taking league, there also needs to be a turnstile

'I am yet to see 50 people seated in a stand at a Wessex League game this season.

'We are lucky at Baffins if we get 50 people through the gate.

'It is only going to get tougher in the future with climate changes.

'For the life of me at the moment, I can't see fixtures being completed.'

Leigh is looking to see his side bounce back after their League Cup defeat against AFC Stoneham in midweek.

He expects to have to reshuffle his team because of injury.

Shane Cornish, Tyler Moret and Tom Froggatt are doubts and Tommy Scutt is definitely out injured.
