But Pompey's boss is adamant he won't recruit just for the sake of it.

Pompey are four points clear at the top of League One heading into December as they maintain their stunning start to the campaign.

It represents a strong platform to earn promotion to the Championship following a seven-season absence.

Jackett is keen to build on such foundations and is presently plotting squad strengthening when the transfer window resumes on January 1.

And he concedes there are aspects of the Blues which need addressing.

He said: '˜I do feel there are gaps there, sometimes we need some fresh competition and also the energy and quality coming in if we can.

'˜It's all in an ideal world, but why sign players for the sake of it? It won't be the case here.

'˜I would suggest the basis of the squad is going to be the basis of the squad, but if we can maximise this window we will.

'˜You are always looking for pace anywhere along the front line, if you can get it that would be great.

'˜We do have pretty good pace and pretty good balance in terms of our front line options this year.

'˜Wanting forwards, forward players with pace, it's not something which is new, but it is something we do look at and target.

'˜Try to not stand still, try to strengthen, work as hard as you can with the budget you have to get the players in.

'˜Have we got anyone done with a month to go? No we haven't. Have we got targets? Yes we have.

'˜You would always try to do it earlier if you can, work out where your budget is and try to make the most out of it.'

Jackett recruited 10 players, including four loanees, during a profitable summer in the previous transfer window.

Yet last January he relied entirely on loanees, with Sylvain Deslandes, Connor Ronan, Anton Walkes and Stephen Henderson arriving.

He added: '˜We will certainly see what happens between now and then, which is quite a number of games.

'˜We'll see where we are when we get to January. Obviously there's different stages, but we'll see how the team looks, what we feel the team needs, and if we can improve this January we certainly will.

'˜We are looking to maximise every transfer window and if we can again be as strong as possible in this one, we will be.'
