Yet Jackett felt the opportunities were there for the thoroughly deserved victory to arrive by a big wider margin.

He said: '˜It was a hard-earned win, as they all are in League One, it's a very competitive division.

'˜Walsall had one or two chances, we had more '“ probably three times the chances they had '“ and crucially put two of those away.

'˜A big chance for them was the volley just after half time which has gone over the bar.

'˜We have counter-attacked very well, which is a feature for us, we get people into good positions and I am pleased for Ronan, he hasn't had a goal for a while and that one will really help him.

'˜Consistency is a big part of it, knowing your jobs. I did feel we would have to work hard to get a clean sheet and limited them to a few chances, not many.

'˜At the other end, when you look at the chances and opportunities we had, I'm pleased we finished two and they were crucial, we could have had more.

'˜Perhaps Evans should have had a penalty as well. Some good chances, some good opportunities and in the end I thought a deserved win on the balance of the game.'
