Matt, Doyle, Novak, Noble - get 'em all down the Park!

Go for Jamille Matt, if Plymouth don’t sign him first. A good, strong target man would be good, with Conor Chaplin playing off him. Better than any of the loan target men of last season.

Chesterfield have yet to offer loanee Lee Novak a contract. Strong striker who scored 15 goals for them last seasn. Get him and O’Shea, they worked well together in a struggling team.

Eight players will only bring us up to where we were last season and just look at how many injuries we had to contend with.

I think last season Cook had, by his own admission, too big a squad but there were far too many players he wouldn’t or couldn’t rely upon so panic loans along the way that had to bed in let us down.

Painterman

Eoin Doyle playing upfront alone away and with Conor Chaplin at home. Stephen Henderson would be the keeper who’d save us 10 points. We know that, we’ve seen him. They’d cost but do we want it?

We could get Henderson easily if Charlton’s owners are still there. He has said he will only stay at Charlton if the owners leave.

And the Charlton owners have proved before they sell their best players for ridiculously low prices, so he wouldn’t be that expensive. Upfront, I’d like to see Smith back.

He fits into Cook’s system, and I believe he gets the best out of our attacking midfielders. For the second striker I’d like to see McNulty back (I know it’s unlikely).

I reckon we will bring in Jimmy Ryan. Cook tried to sign him a year ago but it just took too long. I wouldn’t be surprised if we try and bring him in again.

Iwould add an experienced centre-half to bring a bit more stability and banish those last-minute errors. Thread of experience important. Remember Mellor, Styles, Aizlewood, Brisley, Laidlaw, Garwood et al?

Not just the number of players. But Paul Cook needs to look at the type. I’m convinced we need three big, strong players. One up front, midfield and central defender. We need strength as well.

I disagree fundamentally with the assertion we need two more holding midfielders. I would say we need less holding midfielders and more creative midfielders.

I think our problem at home last season was being too negative against teams that just came for a point. Why would we need two defensive midfielders against teams that just want to defend? In my opinion we only needed one, if any at all.

Are there no box-to-box midfielders around these days? Midfielders that can turn defence into attack and keep up with it even if it’s just to make up the numbers? Liam Sercombe at Oxford managed it, quite successfully in fact!

The two key areas are in goal and up front. If we can get Fulton on a year’s loan (with no recall) and ideally McNulty and Lavery then that would be perfect. I just feel we need a formation that plays to our strengths rather than fit people into Cook’s one-and-only way of playing

As has been pointed out, our defence was one of the best despite the fears people have about the goalkeepers used.

Would we really expect a keeper to not make mistakes now and again in any division? If we get a better goalkeeper we should not concede at all.

Would I rather see Matt Taylor in at left-back than Stephens? Yes. Would I rather see Taylor left midfield rather than Bennett? Absolutely. Is it likely to happen? Only time will tell, but he would undeniably be an outstanding signing for us.

Keep the past in the past if ex-players do return and aren’t as good or agile as we remember them then people get on their backs and become disillusioned. I personally would like to look to the future

If we are discussing ex-players, I think its a shame we have already missed out on Aaron McCarey and Jayden Stockley who have both penned deals in Scotland. I think both could have done a job next season and were free transfers.

If Hollands leaves, or even if he doesn’t, I’d consider Liam Noble (Notts County) as I believe he’s been released on a free. Bit of an angry head but would be good to have two hard men in midfield.

I like Lavery and I think with him in the side we could take League 2 by the scruff of the neck. That being said, the money being talked about, I think we could potentially get McNulty cheaper. Ruffy

Jay O’Shea would be a class signing for us...if the rumour turns out to be true.

Sylvain Distin makes some sense. I can remember Sol Campbell’s inability to break into anything more than a trot in his last years at Fratton Park but he still did a great job for us, calming and directing the defence while being a fearsome barrier to attackers.

Joe Pigott has been released by Charlton. He is a big, strong young lad who did very well against us for promoted Southend last year and has done well at Luton this season. He fits the bill nicely for us I’d say, he’s a mobile target man who can link play and will be within budget and has potential.

Personally, I rated Lavery. However, these sums of money are silly for a club in League Two. If it was 200,000 then maybe worth the risk especially with the Webster money coming in. But there’s no guarantee it would be that low, and does he even want to play here?

Duane Holmes could be worth a punt. The coaches up at Huddersfield say he’s got ability but needs to find a home. Cookie might just be the one to get the best out of him.
