Opinion: Lockdown 2.0 would be doable if we had Portsmouth games to attend

It looks like the #LetFansIn campaign won’t be making much progress in the next few weeks.

Talk of whether Premier League, Football League and National League clubs should be allowed to admit at least some supporters will have to wait until Lockdown 2.0 is over or relaxed.

I’d like to say this is a big setback to a campaign that was gathering pace, but I’m not sure #LetFansIn really was getting anywhere.

I’ve heard nothing from anyone in authority to indicate that the views of clubs, officials and fans across the country were being heard.

On a personal level, it’s more than two weeks since I wrote to my MP asking her to lobby Boris Johnson and Oliver Dowden on the issue, and I’ve heard nothing.

The lack of a response may be because she has a pile of correspondence to deal with – I imagine the free school meals vote sparked a few messages in her inbox.

But it does suggest the urgent need for football to be able to restore its primary source of income is nowhere near the top of the agenda.

Those of us who remember how Margaret Thatcher's government treated football and its fans in the 1980s probably won't be surprised to discover that football clubs and fans are not a group of people the current lot in charge feel any great empathy towards.

But with a new lockdown now in full throttle, we may have to wait to carry on the crusade – though I do think it's important we all carry on making a noise about this.

Lockdown 2 will be hard to bear but a few Pompey games to get excited or irate about may just help.
