The game looked to be heading for a draw when Paterson broke his goal drought three minutes from time.

Injuries to key players didn’t help Borough manager Alex Pike, but his team were second best to a lively home side on the day and goals from Robbie Willmott and Elliott Buchanan were enough to ensure the visitors suffered their sixth league defeat of the season.

Petersfield produced arguably their best Southern League division one central performance of the season to come away with all three points in a thrilling 3-2 win at high-flying Royston Town.

Joe Briggs, Lewis Hyde and David Jerrard were all on target on an afternoon to remember for Ian Saunders’ side.

Meanwhile, Bognor earned a deserved 3-1 win at Wingate & Finchley in the Ryman League premier division.

Craig Robson netted twice for the impressive Rocks, with skipper Jason Prior also converting a penalty – having earlier missed a spot-kick.
