The League Two Blues led at the break courtesy of a brilliant team goal finished off by Gary Roberts in front of a packed Fratton Park crowd.

But the Cherries showed their Premier League quality in the second half to turn the tie on its head thanks to goals from Josh King and substitute Marc Pugh.

Pompey manager Cook insisted, though, that there were positives to take from the 2-1 loss.

He said: ‘It was a good game - we came second best but we wish Bournemouth the best of luck in the next round.

‘We played well first half, we really did, and you always know a team of Bournemouth’s quality will have a spell in the game.

‘They did that but, on reflection and the manner of the game, we probably never deserved to lose.

‘But the reality of it is that we have - we are out and now we can concentrate on our league campaign.

‘That is so important to all of our supporters.’
