The Pompey youngster has been an integral figure in the National League side’s remarkable run to the last 16 of the competition, with League One AFC Wimbledon and Championship Leeds United among the underdogs’ notable scalps.

And having seen divisional counterparts Lincoln City become the first non-league side to reach the quarter-finals of the Cup in more than a century this weekend by shocking top-flight Burnley, inspired May is hoping to follow in the Imps’ footsteps, who intriguingly await tonight’s winner in the last eight

The 18-year-old midfielder said: ‘If Lincoln can do it, why can’t we?

‘Watching Lincoln you do kind of think: “That could be us tonight”.

‘We go into this game with nothing to lose – the club is already making history.

‘We couldn’t have asked for a better draw this round and go into the game with the freedom to enjoy ourselves.

‘Let’s hope we can pull off another shock!’

Whatever the result, May is determined to enjoy every moment of the televised ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ encounter with the 12-time winners.

‘I am really excited,’ he added.

‘Playing Arsenal is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some people, especially me.

‘It’s the biggest game of my career – if I can’t enjoy that, then I am in the wrong sport.’
