Paul Cook admitted Exeter City deserved a point after watching his Pompey side carelessly surrender yet another win late on.

Ollie Watkins netted in the 90th minute at St James Park tonight to cancel out Conor Chaplin’s first-half opener.

It was more heartache for Pompey, who have conceded a number of last-gasp goals in recent weeks – most recently at Morecambe.

Instead they had to settle for a 1-1 draw to lose yet more ground on those clubs in the automatic promotion spots from League Two.

Cook said: ‘The reality is I felt Exeter probably deserved a draw, they kept passing and believing.

‘We just lack that edge, we really do, and were a little bit stretched with numbers tonight and personnel.

‘Conor asked to come off after scoring a smashing goal and we are disappointed with the result but you have to keep moving on and keep moving forward.

‘Whatever we have tried, we have had all the different goes at it and not seen it out.

‘A point will put us wherever we are in the league and we move on to Stevenage.’
