Close friend and fellow central branch member, Basher Benfield, said: ‘Nigel was passionately Pompey and a tremendous chairman for the supporters’ club.

‘We went to Nigeria together and were part of the famous ‘Nigeria XI’.

‘We had a great time out there – he also came to America and was a really close personal friend.

‘I remember when he was the landlord at the Newcome Arms, Milan Mandaric came in and bought everybody a drink.

‘He came in a few times and the odd player came in over the years – Sacha Gaydamak also came in once but was a fish out of water.

‘He didn’t look like he wanted to be there!

‘Nigel’s links to the pub scene meant he was popular also in the pool and darts community – he will be missed by all who knew him.’

Another good friend and central branch member, Paul Banks, was quick to pay his respects to Tresidder.

He added: ‘Loads of times we went away together for pre-season trips – there were so many stories you would not have fit them in a book!

‘He was a great personality and a great promoter of both Pompey and the pub as well.

‘I know he left the Newcome Arms pub but he will always be in there as far as I am concerned.

‘We had so many great times together, many laughs and a few disagreements.

‘Many people can tell a story about Nigel – not just myself – and my wishes go out to his wife Brenda and his family at this difficult time.’
