He went on to play for Barnet and Brentford before leaving Dagenham & Redbridge this summer.

Pompey are looking for a keeper after Paul Jones departed for Championship side Norwich.

That leaves youngster Alex Bass as the only cover in that area.

Cook gave Jones his best wishes following his exit.

He said: ‘We wish Paul well. It’s a great move for him.

‘For anyone to move from a League Two club to a Championship club is a great opportunity.

‘It was quite clear it’s what Paul wanted to do - and we weren’t going to stand in his way.

‘He had a choice to stay here and fight for his place or move to Norwich.

‘Good luck to Jonesy. He is a smashing lad and a good professional who worked hard.

‘He’s been a good pro and we wish him well.’
