Portsmouth chief: There'll be no crazy, big transfer splash

That's the message from Andy Redman as the Blues plot their January transfer window approach.

Kenny Jackett snapped up six players in the summer, paying fees for Ronan Curtis and Anton Walkes.

There was also the lengthy pursuit of Mo Eisa, a potential £1m deal scuppered by Bristol City's late entry.

Of the summer's permanent signings, all but Louis Dennis have been regulars for the table-topping Blues.

And Tornante president Redman has reiterated Pompey's approach to spending.

He said: '˜With recruitment we are leaving no stone unturned and hopefully the same thing will happen over the coming years.

'˜There's a whole group who report into Kenny, who are doing a lot of work on it as well.

'˜We've always had the intent to spend money, I think the thing we have been careful about with the supporters is stressing we aren't going to try to make a crazy, big splash.

'˜We believe in year-on-year, month-on-month, week-on-week growth '“ and the way to do that is not rest your future on one player, no matter how good they may be.

'˜Yes, we did acquire a couple of players over the summer and frankly that is indicative of how we will approach future transfer windows.

'˜We also brought in a couple of youth players who are obviously not yet first-team quality, but similarly are part of the same strategy which is to build at every level one brick at a time.'

This summer also saw a number of loan arrivals recruited from the Championship, with Andre Green, Ben Thompson and David Wheeler joining Premier League Wolves' Joe Mason at Fratton Park.

When asked whether Pompey's wage bill had this season been increased to aid a promotion push, Redman politely declined to expand.

He added: '˜We don't comment on the finances, largely because for us we don't really think that will benefit anybody. Whether it be Kenny, the players or negotiations.

'˜But I will say this, I think everybody is happy with where we came out '“ and the results that have come from the people we have brought on board.'
