Barnsley loanee Cameron McGeehan determined to see Portsmouth fans descend on Wembley again

Pompey are just one victory away from a return to the national stadium after moving into the EFL Trophy semi-finals with a 2-1 win over Scunthorpe.

The Blues made were made to work hard for their success against the 11th-placed League Two side at Fratton Park.

John Marquis put Kenny Jackett’s men in front on 13 minutes, before Abo Esia restored parity for the Iron in the 62nd minute.

But McGeehan’s first goal for the club since arriving from Barnsley on loan earlier this month ensured Pompey’s name will be in the hat for Saturday night’s last-four draw.

The Blues are the competition’s reigning champions, having defeated Sunderland on penalties in March.

More than 40,000 fans descended on Wembley for the memorable afternoon as Pompey hoisted the sliverware aloft.

And McGeehan is hoping he can help that happen in successive campaigns.

The midfielder said: ‘It’s exciting to get these games and obviously try to get through to the final.

'It's going to be tough, but it’s one more win and we’re there so I’m looking forward to the next round.

‘The league is the main concern and that's the one everyone wants to push on in, but it’s a great side attraction to try to get to Wembley.

'I've never played at Wembley before and it's always a good day out – especially when you have got fans like this who are going to pack out the stadium.

‘I’d obviously love to be part of that and it’d be massive. Hopefully we can keep going well.’

McGeehan's maiden Pompey goal came in his third appearance donning the star and crescent.

He was teed-up by Marcus Harness before arrowing his shot into the far corner of the net in front of the Fratton End.

And the former Luton man was always confident he’d find the target.

He added: ‘Marcus did well with the pass and I always fancy myself to score.

‘It’s always good to get your first goal and it was good play.’
