Bone Idle Gossip: Come and guess my Pompey pairings

I wouldn’t want you to think I have had too much time on my hands this week, but I have come up with a new theme for some Pompey brainteasers.

Inspired by the fact the Blues have just signed another two players whose surnames rhyme with others we have had in the past, I have devised a new game which, until I think of something better, I will be calling Rhyming Pompey Pairs.

It is a pretty straightforward concept (I think) and it works like this.

I am going to give you a clue to two Pompey players - they could be past or present – whose surnames rhyme.

Now, the concept of rhyming can cause debate but this is my game and if I say two names rhyme, they rhyme. I don’t want any dissent in the ranks.

We’ll kick off with six Rhyming Pompey Pairs for you to guess, and see how it goes.

If it takes off, it will be a primetime BBC1 game show by this time next month; if it doesn't, I’ll consign it to the long list of columns I’ve done that people have not responded to. Here goes…

1 Two players who love a long-range goal.

2 Two strikers who played up front in the Blues’ 2011-12 team.

3 Midfielders who have scored for Pompey away to a team beginning with ‘South’.

4 Two chaps signed on loan from clubs who met in the 2013 League Cup final.

5 ‘Magicians’ from states which were part of the former Yugoslavia.

6 Two midfielders whose first names are four letters long and begin with A.

I’m afraid there will be no cash prizes.

Why? Well, you know what they say: rhyme doesn’t pay...
