The 32-year-old had been without a club since being released by Pompey at the end of the season along with Adam May, Luke McGee and Oli Hawkins.

Now he has joined Richie Wellens’ newly-promoted Swindon, who also have former Pompey player Dion Donohue on their books.

And Pitman is eyeing his return to the south coast when the sides first meet in this season’s League One on Boxing Day,

He told swindontownfc.co.uk: ‘It will be good and it will be exciting (to go to Pompey).

‘I had a great relationship with the fans at Portsmouth, they respected me and respected what I did. So I have nothing but admiration for the Portsmouth fans.

‘But I am looking forward to going back there – and hopefully trying to win.’

Swindon were crowned champions of League Two during last season’s promotion.

Danny Rose featured that term, although has since joined Grimsby, while Donohue made six appearances.

Now they have Pitman among their ranks, whose miserable end to his Pompey career ensures he has yet to play a competitive match in 2020.

He added: ‘It's exciting to join a club that got promoted last season and that will be going in the right direction, full of confidence for the new season.

‘I did my homework and found out he (the manager) plays good football, exciting football and at my age that was a massive factor to enjoy my football.

‘It's a good club, they can take the momentum from last season onwards and hopefully do well this season.

‘I think it will be a tough league, like it is every year.

‘Just because you have big teams in there doesn’t necessarily mean that they are going to be right up there,

‘Look at Ipswich, they finished 11th last season when they were everyone’s favourites to bounce straight back up, Sunderland didn’t get into the play-offs.

‘Just because teams by name are so-called big teams for the league, I don’t think that really matters. It is more what goes on on the pitch, rather than the name on the shirt.’
