The Brighton boss is set to hand number of his fringe players an opportunity to impress, including the likes of Dan Burn and Viktor Gyokeres.

Former Pompey target Alex Cochrane will also be hoping to get a rare first-team chance, having made only one senipr appearance.

Blues academy graduate Adam Webster is likely to be rested.

Adam Lallana (calf) and Ben White (ankle) have both been ruled out of the clash after coming off injured against Chelsea.

Pompey are hopeful Bryn Morris will be available for the trip to the Amex.

The midfielder came off with a hip injury in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Shrewsbury on the opening day of the League One season.

Kenny Jackett is optimistic Morris will make the short jaunt across the A27 to face the Premier League side, though.

The former Middlesbrough man is Pompey's only fresh injury concern.

Alex Bass remains absent with ankle bruising, while Callum Johnson is cup-tied having played for Accrington against Burton in the competition before his switch to Fratton Park. That will mean James Bolton starts at right-back.

New-signing Michael Jacobs will be in the squad, although is unlikely to feature from the outset.

Pompey may also not risk Jack Whatmough and rest him ahead of Sunday's league trip to Rochdale.

Predicted starting XI

Craig MacGillivray, James Bolton, Jack Whatmough Sean Raggett, Lee Brown, Tom Naylor, Ben Close, Ryan Williams, Gareth Evans, Ronan Curtis, John Marquis.
