And he expects movement in the situation over ‘the next few days’ as he looks to trim his Robins squad ahead of their Championship campaign.

The Blues have emerged as one of the front-runners for Szmodics’ signature following his impressive loan spell at Peterborough last season.

Posh remain keen on the 24-year-old, along with Sunderland. Meanwhile, interest also exists from the Championship.

The News understands that if Szmodics returns to League One then he would prefer to join Pompey than return to Peterborough or move to the Black Cats.

But wherever he decides to go, Bristol City have made it clear they won’t stand in his way.

Manager Holden told BBC Bristol: ‘There are offers in for Sammie.

‘He’s at a point where he needs to go and play.

‘We might see something happen in the next few days. We need to trim the squad.’

Szmodics moved to the Robins last summer from Colchester but struggled to establish himself at Ashton Gate.

The attacking-midfielder made just four appearances, including one start in the second tier.

That led to Szmodics going out on loan to Peterborough in the January transfer window, after Pompey had been considering a move for him.

The former Braintree loanee hit the ground running at London Road.

He registered four goals and three assists in 10 outings for the Posh before the 2019-20 campaign was curtailed amid the Covid-19 crisis.

Szmodics has trained with Bristol City during pre-season.

However, he was omitted from the Robins’ match-day squad for their opening game of the campaign on Saturday – a 2-0 win against Exeter in the Carabao Cup first round.
