The 23-year-old has joined the Blues for an undisclosed fee after penning a two-year-deal, with the club holding an option for a further 12 months.

He’ll be available for tomorrow night’s EFL Trophy game against Colchester, when he could make his Fratton Park debut.

It is believed manager Kenny Jackett fought off competition for the defender, with Championship Preston North End being long-term admirers.

Johnson represents Pompey’s third new signing of the transfer window, following Sean Raggett and Cameron Pring, who arrived on loan from Bristol City last week, in moving to Fratton Park.

But there could be more on the way, with The News understanding that Bristol City midfielder Sammie Szmodics is also high on the Blues wanted list.

Meanwhile, Pompey have made enquiries for Stoke City centre-back Harry Souttar.

He initially moved to the Wham Stadium on loan from Middlesbrough in the summer 2017, before making his move permanent the following January.

Johnson helped Stanley clinch the League Two title in 2018, while he played a key role as John Coleman’s side retained their third-tier status over the past two seasons.

In total, the full-back has made 119 appearances for Accrington, scoring one goal.

Johnson played the entire 90 minutes and came through unscathed ahead of his switch to the south coast.

He had a year left on his deal at Accy, after the club took the option of extending his contract by 12 months earlier this summer.

The defender promises to be an exciting addition to Jackett’s squad as Pompey again push for promotion to the Championship.

Johnson will compete with James Bolton for the right-back spot at Fratton Park.
