Charlton 'set to sign' ex-Premier League forward previously linked with Portsmouth and West Ham on free transfer

Former Brighton forward Solly March is reportedly set to sign for Championship Charlton after being linked with the likes of Pompey and West Ham in the summer

Pompey rivals Charlton are set to bolster their ranks by announcing the free-transfer arrival of Solly March.

Reports claim Nathan Jones’ Championship outfit are poised to end the former Brighton favourite’s search for a new club by handing him a deal at The Valley.

The 32-year-old has been a free agent since his 13-year spell with the Seagulls came to an end at the climax of the 2025-26 season.

March made 300 appearances for the Premier League side, registering 26 goals and 31 assists. But with injuries limiting him to just 19 top-flight appearances over the past three years, the forward was told by boss Fabian Hurzeler he would not be part of his plans moving forward.

That led to much speculation over the summer months where March would eventually end up. Indeed, Pompey were among a number of clubs that also included West Ham and Southampton, who were linked with his services.

However, three-and-a-half-months on from his Brighton contract not being renewed, it appears Charlton are the club to help the player extend his career.

The Addicks currently sit 10th in the table with 14 points from their 10 league games played to date.

Current boss Nathan Jones previously worked with March during his time as first-team assistant manager and first-team coach with the south-coast side before he made the step up into management.

Charlton’s move for the forward comes at a time when they are waiting on Matt Godden to return to action after he suffered a muscle injury on the opening day of the Championship season.

The attacker has missed the Addicks’ past 10 games, including their goalless draw at home against Pompey on September 12.

John Mousinho’s boss have so far resisted the temptation to dip their toe in the free agent’s market, despite nine players set to sit out today’s trip to Norwich City.

Keshi Anderson is the latest name to be added to that list after he suffered a hamstring injury against Sheffield United on Wednesday night, just two games into his comeback from a three-month lay-off for a quad problem.

The News understands that Pompey are open to allowing March’s former Brighton team-mate, Adam Webster, train with them to aid his recovery from an ACL injury.

The 32-year-old free agent came through the youth ranks at Fratton Park and made 81 senior appearances before his move to Ipswich Town in 2016.
