Ellis Harrison gives reaction to key misses as Portsmouth's winning run ends at Coventry

The striker told of his frustration at failing to make the most of his opportunities as the Blues fell to a 1-0 loss to promotion rivals Coventry.

Kenny Jackett’s side were undone by uncharacteristic sloppy defending from a throw as summer transfer target Matt Godden decided the game.

But Harrison rued his misses in a game with few clear sights of goal for either side.

The 26-year saw Marko Marosi keep out his finish seconds after his second-half introduction for John Marquis.

Then the summer arrival from Ipswich fired over at the death when at full stretch, as the ball dropped to him a few yards out.

Harrison was quick to put his hands up and admit he should have done better.

He said: ‘Obviously I should have scored. The keeper has made a good save (with the first chance).

‘It was my first touch after I came on. It’s disappointing but we can’t swell on it. We have to go again.

‘I was stretching but nine times out of 10 I should score that (the second chance).

‘I was disappointed with myself about it, but there’s no point in crying over spilt milk. We just have to go again on Saturday now.’

The loss puts paid to extending Pompey’s winning run, after they set a new mark for consecutive wins stretching back to when they joined the Football League in 1920.

Harrison knows the challenge now is to embark on a set of results of similar quality after dropping a place to sixth in League One.

The striker feels there’s no reason his side can’t not go on a run of that magnitude in the coming weeks.

Harrison believes it’s important Pompey don’t linger on the St Andrew’s disappointment and focus on delivering a maximum return against Shrewsbury this weekend.

He added: ‘We can’t dwell on it. We have to go again now against Shrewsbury.

‘We hope we can do it again now. We can’t just sit back after what we’ve done.

‘There is still 15 games to go this season.

‘We never want to lose and when we do it hurts.

‘There’s a long way to go and hopefully we can now go another run like that for the rest of the season.’
