However, the defender was omitted for the final two games of the competition when Kenny Jackett decided to go full strength.

Casey wasn't involved in the last-four success at Bury or in the penalty shootout victory over the Black Cats in front of 85,000 fans.

The Botley lad was still part of the dressing room celebrations, though.

Vaughan was an unused substitute at the national stadium, having arrived on loan from Wigan on January transfer deadline day.

However, the former Everton striker didn't forget about Casey's involvement to the final – and gave up his medal on the pitch shortly after being presented it in the royal box.

The academy graduate was released by Pompey following the expiry of his contract.

But as he starts a new chapter in his career, he’ll always ben grateful for what Vaughan did.

Casey said: ‘Obviously, I was disappointed I couldn't be on the pitch playing at Wembley, but being there and celebrating with the team was amazing.

‘Celebrating a win at Wembley isn't an experience that many players get in their career so to be part of that at such a young age was amazing.

‘James Vaughan gave me his medal because I played in a few more games than him.

‘He was so understanding and was such a nice guy.

‘He gave me his medal as soon as he got it when we were out on the pitch.

‘It was a great feeling because it shows he recognises the young players and doesn't forget what they've done for the team.

‘Having him give me a medal was amazing. That whole day will stick with me forever because being part of a team that's won at Wembley was brilliant.’

Casey departs Pompey after making three appearances in total.

The ex-Norwich man featured 11 times during his spell at Fratton Park but failed to score.
