The Blues made their win harder than it should have, though, after throwing away a two-goal advantage.

An own goal from David Cornell and a Tom Naylor strike put Pompey firmly in control after 13 minutes but the Ipswich hit back to take the tie into extra-time.

But Sean Raggett proved the unlikely hero to ensure Kenny Jackett’s men defeated their League One rivals at Portman Road.

Pompey made a dream start and deservedly raced into a commanding lead.

On 11 minutes, Ryan Williams was hacked down 25 yards from goal, giving the Blues a dangerous free-kick. Up stepped Ronan Curtis, whose curling effort crashed against the post and then hit home keeper David Cornell’s back to roll in.

And in the 13th minute the visitors had their second. Andy Cannon brought the ball down inside the area and teed-up Naylor. The skipper needed no invitation to shoot and his effort found the back of the net via a deflection off Mark McGuinness.

Pompey’s aggressive pressing was causing Ipswich all sorts of problems and everytime they went forward looked like they’d score. Curtis had an effort well saved after a swift counter, while Marcus Harness could have perhaps shot when Cornell gave the ball away when under pressure from Williams.

Yet the Tractor Boys gave themselves a lifeline from nowhere in the 43rd minute. A long punt forward wasn’t dealt with and Sean Raggett’s heavy touch gifted the ball to Jon Nolan, who fired past visiting stopper Craig MacGillivray.

Buoyed by reducing the arrears, Ipswich started the second period on the front foot. Ex-Pompey striker wanted a penalty when he claimed he was dragged down by Rasmus Nicolaisen but the referee wasn’t interested.

Their equaliser arrived on 68 minutes through substitute James Norwood. Pompey lost the ball and were hit on the break, with Norwood applying a neat finish.

Both sides had chances to win the tie in stoppage-time. For Ipswich, Freddie Sears couldn’t quite get a shot off when inside the six-yard box.

Then Ben Close missed a gilt-edged opportunity when he fired over from Williams’ cutback.

The game went to extra-time and Pompey looked the more dangerous.

And they got their head back in front in the 111th minute through Raggett. Naylor’s header produced a save from the keeper before Raggett was there first to poke home the rebound from close range.

Pompey held on in the closing stages and, in truth, looked the more likelier to score.

The Blues are into the second round of the Cup for a third successive season – and will find out their opponents in Monday night’s draw.
