Main endured a difficult one-and-a-half years at Fratton Park. Arriving from Doncaster in the summer of 2016, he scored six goals in 23 appearances before leaving for Motherwell.

Yet he's joined a Shrewsbury side who have been given a huge fillip since ex-Pompey boss Steve Cotterill took charge.

Main made his debut in the Shrews’ 1-0 victory a Swindon.

Now the former Middlesbrough forward has been backed to continue helping Cotterill’s side fire on all cylinders.

Shrewsbury assistant-boss Aaron Wilbraham told the Shropshire Star: ‘When I was a player, whenever a new player came in you wanted to let them know you were a good player, so you up your standards a little bit because you want them to see you are one of the best players in the squad.

‘It raises everyone and it’s competition for places. Having someone like Curtis, who comes in with his attitude, straight away you can see he’s the right type and keen to learn.

'With those type of characters, Curtis Main and David Davies, they are not the type of players to rest on their laurels.

‘You can see they’ve got that real hunger and desire to do well.’

Pompey travel to Shrewsbury on March 27.
