Mendez-Laing spent a period on loan at Fratton Park from Peterborough during the 2012-13 season, making eight appearances.
The former England youth international went on to play for Shrewsbury, Cambridge and Rochdale before earning a move to Cardiff in 2017.
He helped the south Wales side earn promotion to the Premier League during his first season at the club.
Mendez-Laing was also a key player for Neil Harris’ side last term, scoring three times in 29 games, as they suffered Championship play-off semi-final defeat to Fulham.
