Ex-Portsmouth, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United defender's plea answered after offer to play for free

According to the Southend Echo, the defender is currently training with the League Two basement side.

The 36-year-old has been a free agent since departing Aberdeen in May 2019.

Halford, who scored 12 goals in 77 appearances during his two-year spell at Fratton Park, insisted his hunger was 'as strong as ever' to get his career back on track.

Pompey boss Kenny Jackett – who worked with Halford during his brief time as Rotherham boss – revealed he wouldn’t be pursuing a move for the ex-Sunderland and Forest man.

And while Halford hasn’t put pen to paper on a deal at Southend, he is reportedly training with them.

The Shrimpers sit seven points adrift at the bottom of League Two, Mark Molesley’s side have won only one of their opening 15 games since their relegation last season.

However, the Roots Hall outfit are still under a transfer embargo – meaning Halford cannot be registered until that is lifted.
