Fans deliver their verdicts on Portsmouth's future after Oxford play-off defeat

It’s a cliche, we know, but football is a game of opinions.

One fan’s verdict on a player or a game can vary greatly from the person sat next to him in the Fratton End or the Victory Lounge after the game.

We all have our view points and will happily discuss them given the importance of football, and this respect, Pompey in our everyday lives.

They’re debates and offerings that keep the conversation going and our interest at peak levels in-between games – and even between seasons, as is the case with the Blues now.

The Blues’ failure to yet again register a win in the end-of-season format and have the chance of another promotion wrestled from their grasp sparked plenty of comment and suggestion from the Fratton faithful.

But after the dust had settled on Monday night’s proceedings and hopefully fans had gathered their thoughts more, we posed the simple question on Facebook and Twitter: What next for Pompey?Well, as ever readers didn’t let us down, offering their suggestions for a way forward.

In fact, we received probably our highest among of responses to our post.

And while opinions varied – the message most adopted was overwhelming.

Here’s a selection of the views shared….

Ron Clark: I don't think we need to spend large amounts of cash, as we have the the players there, may be a few, but we just need better tactics we never attack enough.

When I played at school I was told the best form of defence is to attack, not score and sit back,

Nice bloke as Jackett might be, it’s time for something new.

Nicolas Boorn: I think we'd have struggled in Championship, and this is all part of the long-term plan from the owners. Stability and progression.

This season has been somewhat different, and who knows what would've happened had we been allowed to finish the season properly.I think Jackett is a good manager and not sure who we'd get to replace him.Being on next season with a few new signings.

Mikey PW: I can't possibly see how the relationship between manager and players is healthy or sustainable.

Naylor and Close will be baffled by their shut out in 2 such important games after playing regularly.

Pitman and Evans publicly humiliated with their captaincy strippings earlier in the season.

MacGillivray out in the cold with no sound explanation.

Downing and McGee signed and exiled.

Burgess not in contention and had to fight back - now leaving.

Roberts and Baker immediately discarded with little respect when Kenny first came in.

It isn't normal for a manager to so obviously fall out with so many players. Just one problem that needs fixing for me.

John Manuel: I think the Eisners will stick with Jackett, and rightly so in my opinion.

He isn't far off getting it right and hopefully he will get us there.

Off the pitch the club is progressing very nicely indeed.

This season the division was stronger than it appeared on paper and the fact that 9 teams were in the mix prior to lockdown would reinforce that opinion.

Unfortunately next season it is likely to be even stronger

Ian Nisbeck: Jackett has been treated fairly and given enough time.

The whole season has been disappointing and the play-offs are the final straw.

Time to change manager and hopefully get a manager who can deliver better entertainment as well as results.

A suggestion who is available would be Nigel Clough, or we could try to get Ryan Lowe from Plymouth.

Peter West: Isn't there a saying in business that if you keep doing the same thing with the same people you'll get the same result.

Much as I like the Eisner's desire for stability I think it's now time for a change.

I don't think many fans would stomach another season of the same.

Ray Fogwill: Through all the bad times the fans have stuck by Portsmouth football club, for me 60+ years, but these last 2 seasons the team selections, signings and style of football has been abysmal.

Nobody seems to be listening to the fans who have supported Pompey home and away in their numbers.

If nothing changes you could lose many.

Darrel Windebank: Hopefully can keep the majority of the group together and bring in some extra quality to mount a serious challenge.

It’s a tough league with some big teams in the division but we should have done more away from home and the bad start didn’t help.

Perhaps a more attacking formation would make a difference as the one man upfront is tough for any striker.

Hopefully we will bounce back next season but in order to do that more investment into the squad is still needed.

Shaw Swanton: Not good enough to go up plain and simple.

Need a squad of our players not loaned ones and build a team from there.

Maybe appoint Stuart Pearce as manager as he has some passion to match our supporters.

Lewis Hutchison: We are going to need a significant amount invested into playing squad for new players as there's going to be some big teams coming down from championship and they are going to want to rebound back up so we have to stake a claim early in the season and keep up the top of the table and new manager.

Why buy Marquis when your going to play 4-3-2-1 he cant be upfront on his own.

Ben Sheath I’ve never been part of the Jackett out brigade and always believed a manager should be given time.

However I’m starting to lose faith.

The team and the squad don’t seem to be improving, inspired or displaying performances consistently and ultimately the manager has to take responsibility.

He’s had long enough to get it right and it’s clearly not working well enough.

I like the Eisners and respect the slow build of the club but it’s never going to improve without some investment in the squad.

We’ve got some great players just need to find someone to help get the best out of them.

Richard Bailey: 5 year plan not going well. Sad to say need more attacking players

Ernie Sexton: Statistically KJ has a good record but the football he delivers is dire - he shows no emotion (win or lose) and that is reflected in the team.

I want to be entertained and excitedly look forward to the next match.

Sadly with KJ’s football there is no entertainment and no anticipation of the next game.

I fear I apathy has set in and I am losing my appetite for the game.

Kelvin Maverick Mcnamee: I think Pompey need to start spending more money on some new talent cus we seem to getting rid of our best players.

Alan Thompson: Need a playmaker a la Merson and to be more adventurous.

Andy 'Jonno' Johnson: Last night came down to an own goal and the lottery of penalties which we lost due to a good save.

We were the better team in my opinion but the damage wasn’t done last night.

Moving forward I’d like a fresh start, with a new approach, playing positive, attacking football.

Unfortunately that isn’t a brand of football Kenny has been able to give us during his tenure.

He seems a decent bloke but that isn’t enough. Well done to Oxford.

Kevin Crockford: If you want different results, you have to do things differently, basic ABC in business.

A heck of a shame Warnock went to Middlesboro, that's what we need, some passion and a will to win.

Good luck Pompey next season, I'm sure we'll all be there again, it's easy to support the big named clubs, challenging to support ones home team, but Pompey have that in abundance.

Come on Mr Eisner, your loyal subjects deserve better. PUP

Jason Hall: Rebuild with a new manager, respect to Kenny he gave it a good go but it hasn't been enough to get us over the line.

Players wise there is going to be a fair shake-up, try to keep hold of Curtis but by what his mum says he is going to want an improved wage.

Naylor, Harness, Williams, Marquis, Harrison, keep them all on-board but I'm not fussed about any of the others.

Dan Knight: A new rebuild is required. All respect to KJ who got us close but not close enough.

Ali Lance: The fans have lost confidence in KJ.

He has had his chances to get this team promoted and failed.

We need somebody with new ideas to take this opportunity to restructure the club with the players that are left.

He's done a solid job establishing us in league 1 but we need a younger fresher manager.

His style of football is dull and to safe at times as well as his transfer policy is mind boggling.

I wish KJ all the best as he is a decent respectful guy but we need a new approach.
