The 30-year-old is currently on loan at League Two Grimsby after being left out of the Gas’ 22-man League One squad at the start of the season by then manager Ben Garner.

The move was seen as the final instalment of a frustrating Memorial Stadium spell for the Blues’ League Two title-winner, following his move from Fratton Park in January 2018.

However, with Rovers 18th in the table and three points above the relegation zone, new manager Paul Tisdale is contemplating recalling Bennett from his Blundell Park loan, along with Abu Ogogo, who is currently at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Tisdale told Bristol Live: ‘I have long-term plans, of course, but my immediate focus is making the best of it and making it a successful, safe season.

‘The quicker I can get safe and in a good position in the league, the better.

‘I’m looking at all options and that does include players that are signed at Bristol Rovers who are out on loan.

‘I’m looking at those players probably more than I’m looking at other club’s players at the moment, because that’s a tangible decision.

‘There’s less players involved in this one. If we want to bring back a player who’s on loan, it’s our choice and he comes back.

‘It’s a lot simpler if those options work than signing players elsewhere and going through the rigmarole of agents and other clubs.

‘Whether it’s Abu or Kyle, whoever it might be, I’m looking at all those options and considering the impact those players may have on the squad.’

Bennett has made 62 appearances for Rovers and scored four times.

He had agreed to cancel his Pompey contract by mutual consent to join their League One rivals at the start of 2018 following 117 appearances at 13 goals at Fratton Park.

Last term he featured 19 times, although started just two league fixtures.

To date, Bennett has played 12 times for Grimsby this season without scoring.
