Robins boss Richie Wellens is keen to add the Welshman to his ranks as they prepare for a return to League One next season.

Donohue left Fratton last summer after scoring one goal in 48 appearances during his two-year spell.

Donohue pleaded guilty to affray, GBH and assault at Nottingham Crown Court in January.

He featured six times in total but did not play after November 9 because of injury and FA registration problems.

The former Chesterfield man did attend the Robins’ League Two title celebrations last month, however.

He will now report for pre-season training with Swindon to pay his 'debt of gratitude’ he owes to Wellens.

And should everything run smoothly then the versatile left-footer will sign a deal in September.

Wellens told BBC Wiltshire: ‘We're going to offer Dion Donohue a contract.

‘He's a very good player and obviously had issues – I'm going to give him his very last chance.

‘I think he owes me a debt of gratitude, if you like, and I think he's coming back on our terms.

‘If we get him up and firing them we've all seen what a talented boy he is.

‘Now we just need to manage him right. The value for money we’re getting him for is exceptional.

‘We will probably take Dion in pre-season, let him train with us then in September he'll sign a contract as long as everything is going along as it should be.’
