Gaffer: I would have put my house on Brett Pitman taking those Portsmouth chances against Rochdale

Gaffer for a day, Paul Fletcher, from Cosham, gives his verdict on Pompey’s goalless draw at Rochdale.

So what’s your overall assessment?

The first half was hard work to watch, I’m not going to lie.

It was horrible - so boring and typical Pompey.

We looked like a side like Rochdale and they looked like what Pompey should be.

Then in the second half we came out and looked like we might score, although at the same time it didn’t look like we were going to put the ball in the net!

We did look more attacking, but in the first it looked like we had no intention of scoring, more concerned with playing the ball in the midfield.

We lost it a few times with some sloppy passes and could have easily lost the game.

Did the second-half performance warrant a win? It’s one of those where you say ‘yeah’.

We had enough chances. John Marquis had three clear-cut chances and should have scored.

But then Rochdale went up and had two clear chances of their own, which Craig MacGillivray saved and then Jack Whatmough cleared one off the line.

Yes, Pompey could have gone and won it, but then you look at their chances and you think ‘well, they probably think they could have won’.

It was one of those games.

You clearly think Marquis should have done better.

I like Marquis but I don’t think he can play up front on his own.

And with this formation, I just don’t see where the goals are going to come from.

I don’t see a natural goalscorer in that team.

Brett Pitman would have scored at least two of those chances.

We need to do something and get a proper goalscorer.

Is it a matter of bringing in a new striker or changing the formation?

I think Jackett needs to go two up top first and then decide.

The wage cap must be taken into consideration and he needs to add another defender, but I also think he needs another striker.

Saying that, I think Jackett is too stubborn to change formation.

He tried doing at Rochdale but he’s so stubborn that he’ll go and play one up top against Wigan.

Do the forwards get enough support from midfield?

I thought Tom Naylor went forward okay.

But as much as Bryn Morris is meant to be a holding midfielder, he’s meant to push up, too. But he likes to go backwards too much or side ways.

He doesn’t go forward enough.

I think Jackett, therefore, needs to look at how we set up. Are we too defensive?

We should be going to the likes of Rochdale to beat these teams because on the pitch and on paper we are better than them.

Another thing for me was that we played lump-ball again in the first half.

In the second half we played it on the floor and it was starting to tick, but it seemed like it was all too late.

It was very frustrating to watch, it just doesn’t fill me with confidence.

Where do you sit on the Jackett debate?

I think he’s got to go.

It’s not working, it’s the same old, same old.

Who’s going to score us 25 goals a season under him?

Some would say Pitman’s lazy, but he scored 25 goals in his first season.

He’s old fashioned, yes, but it’s about having that moment of magic.

Gary Roberts might not have been in games, but when it came to moments of brilliance he’d be there - and they’re the type of players we miss.

I think Jackett was wrong to let those type of players go.

Yesterday would have suited Pitman, I would have put my house on him taking those chances.

It’s another two points dropped and another wasted afternoon watching football.

There’s nothing really exciting from anyone.
