‘Good to be back’: Portsmouth man’s target as career goes full circle

Jacob Farrell has returned to the A-League in search of the playing time he wasn’t getting in the Championship with Pompey.

Jacob Farrell is out to ‘kickstart’ his career after returning to Australia.

And joining a side rooted to the bottom of the A-League isn’t a concern for the defender, as he goes in search of the playing time he’s been unable to find at Pompey.

Pompey defender: ‘Hopefully I can kickstart my career’

Farrell completed a move to Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday, with his debut following with a 45-minute outing in a 1-1 draw with Melbourne City on Saturday.

The 23-year-old has played just three times for John Mousinho’s side since the summer of 2024, after joining on a four-year deal, in a stay at PO4 hampered by injuries.

Now Farrell finds himself back is homeland playing in the league where he made his name as a front-footed left-back with Central Coast Mariners.

John Mousinho yesterday made it clear he thinks Farrell can still have a career at Fratton Park, with the plan in his eyes for the Aussie to get regular minutes and vie for a starting spot once again in pre-season.

Farrell echoed those sentiments after being immediately brought into the first-team picture at the CommBank Stadium, despite arriving at the club from England just last Wednesday.

‘I haven’t had many minutes lately, so I’m thankful for the Wanderers giving me the opportunity. It’s good to be playing again.

‘I just really want to play consistent football, having not been out on the pitch for a while.

‘It’s really good to be back here and hopefully I can kickstart my career a little bit here.

‘I always enjoyed versing the Wanderers in the past, the club’s support base is full of passionate fans and I’m excited to represent the West and give my all for the club.

‘I’ve settled in well, the boys have got around me and there’s a good vibe, it’s positive.

‘There’s still a bit of work to be done here, but I’m pretty confident we’ll do well for the rest of the season.’

Farrell aiming for Final Series with Western Sydney Wanderers

Despite joining a club at the bottom of the A-League, Farrell is confident he is linking up with an outfit who can get their season moving in the right direction in Sydney.

With 16 games played it’s still a very congested table, with just seven points separating the Wanderers from sixth place - which is the last berth sides going into the Finals Series need to reach. Those six teams then battle it out in those play-offs, with the Grand Final winner crowned A-League champions

Farrell feels his new side having an involvement in those end-of-season fixtures isn’t a pipedream, despite their lowly position,

He added: ‘Obviously it’s a goal (to reach the top six), it will always be a goal no matter where you are on the ladder.

‘I think the fans deserve it and the club deserves it. The boys work pretty hard here, so I think it’s the least we can do for the fans to try to do our best to make that top six.’
