With the Blues out of action because of a frozen pitch at Accrington, Kenny Jackett and his team had to look on intently from home as their rivals continued without them.

And they will have seen fellow promotion-contenders Hull move back above them in the table, after Grant McCann’s side earned a 2-0 win at home to Charlton.

The Blues knocked Hull off top spot on December 18 thanks to a 2-0 win at the KCOM Stadium – Pompey’s last game.

This was the Tigers’ first game back since that telling defeat.

However, they didn’t let it affect their confidence as they beat Lee Bowyer’s side thanks to goals from Hakeeb Adelakun (18) and Greg Docherty (76).

That sees Hull move on to 37 points – two above the Blues with the same number of games played (19).

League leaders Lincoln, who moved above Pompey in the table following the postponement of the Blues’ festive fixtures, stretched their lead over Jackett’s side with a 2-1 win at AFC Wimbledon.

Despite manager Michael Appleton being at home with coronavirus, they came up with the goods at Plough Lane thanks to goals from Tayo Edun (8) and Tom Hopper (83).

Lincoln have now played a game more than Pompey but are six points clear of them on 41 points.

With Peterborough v Doncaster Rovers off because of Covid issues, they only other game that the Blues will have been keeping an eye on was Sunderland’s trip to Northampton.

The Blacks Cats, who were 11th in the table going into today’s action, had not played since a 1-1 draw with Wimbledon on December 15.

And that lack of game time showed as Lee Johnson’s side could only manage a goalless draw at Northampton.

It’s a result that sees them remain 11th – one place and a point above Oxford, who secured a fourth consecutive win with a 5-1 win at Burton.

Elsewhere in League One, Bristol Rovers beat Blackpool 2-1, while Plymouth were 1-0 winners against Gillingham at Home Park.

Fleetwood v Ipswich, originally scheduled for Monday night, has been postponed due to coronavirus.

Today’s Shrewsbury v Crewe, Peterborough v Doncaster and Rochdale v MK Dons games were called off for similar reasons.
