And initial suggestions are he will line-up as part of a back three for tonight’s encounter at the Keepmoat Stadium.

While Whatmough replaces Andy Cannon in what appears to be a system change which few would have anticipated.

Meanwhile, with James Bolton and Callum Johnson still sidelined by injury, Haji Mnoga continues at right-back.

There is no recall for John Marquis on the return to the club where he was so prolific before departing in the summer of 2019.

Instead he occupies a spot on a Blues bench which includes omitted duo Brown and Cannon.

Pompey: MacGillivray, Whatmough, Raggett, Nicolaisen, Mnoga, Daniels, Naylor, White, Harness, Curtis, Harrison.

Subs: Ward, Marquis, Williams, Brown, Hiwula, Byers, Cannon.
