Barton took over Fleetwood in June 2018 and led them to last season’s play-offs, where they lost at the semi-final stage to eventual winners Wycombe.

He brought his side to Fratton Park last month, the fixture ending in a goalless draw which frustrated the Blues.

In a short statement on their website, Fleetwood said: ‘Fleetwood Town can confirm manager Joey Barton has left the club with immediate effect.

‘We would like to thank Joey for his work during his time at Highbury Stadium and wish him success in the future.’
